The Aging of Asphalt

Asphalt pavement rarely ages from too much traffic, the culprit of surface deterioration is the sun and rain as well as man-made materials such as gasoline, antifreeze and oil. The weathering effect, known as oxidation, causes the asphalt pavement to lighten and gray in color. Once oxidation sets in on asphalt pavement the surface becomes rough and cracks will start to develop. The aging process can also be accelerated by water gathering in the cracks and can further jeopardize the integrity of the asphalt, sub-grade and base rock.
